I just finished a book about the harms of American productivity culture.
And hidden in one of the stories in the book is a simple rule I loved.
Two friends made a texting pact.
Write when you can. Never apologize for how long it has been.
A reply might come tomorrow or three weeks from now.
When it comes, simply write back.
No, “Sorry for the delay.” No, “Did you get my message?”
I love this rule, because it removes the “apology tax “and lets friendship breathe.
But it’s incomplete.
Notice what the rule cannot reach.
It can quiet the guilt between two people.
It cannot quiet the story inside them.
Because the rule governs what they say.
It has no authority over what the mind does with silence.
The text has gone unanswered longer than usual.
By dinner, your mind has begun explaining why.
Maybe they are hurt. Maybe they are pulling away. Maybe you finally said the wrong thing.
But uncertainty has started to feel unbearable.
We do this with more than messages.
A conversation feels slightly off. A choice that felt clear yesterday feels uncertain today.
The mind does not like unfinished moments.
It would often rather have a painful answer than no answer at all.
Even a frightening story gives us something to hold.
Notice what happens in the body.
The jaw sets. The stomach tightens.
You turn over the same few facts until worry begins to sound like intuition.
A passing feeling becomes a prophecy.
But a feeling can be real without being a prophecy.
Be gentle with the part of you that forgets this.
It learned that explaining the silence quickly felt safer than being surprised by what came next.
Ram Dass’s patience is not passive.
He is not telling you to ignore what you know.
He is reminding you that clarity has a time of its own.
The unanswered text can remain unanswered tonight.
The feeling can be felt before it is interpreted.
Sometimes the most honest thing you can say is:
I don’t know yet.
When the question comes, *What does this mean?* try a smaller one:
What is here?
Maybe tightness. Maybe disappointment.
Maybe tiredness, love, or the wish to be reassured.
Let those things be here without making them predict the future.
Feel your feet on the floor.
Let one full breath arrive.
Then do the next kind thing that does not require certainty.
Eat dinner. Get some sleep. Ask the simple question when the time comes.
Waiting is not doing nothing.
It is giving truth a little more room than fear.
Not knowing is not always confusion. Sometimes it is honesty.
The friendship texting rule removes the pressure to answer quickly.
The deeper practice removes the pressure to know.
Tomorrow, an answer may come. Or the question may feel different toomrrow.
For now, let one uncertain thing remain unfinished.
You do not have to turn this moment into a story about your whole life.
You do not have to know what it means yet.
